Suggested Tools:
  • Socket wrench and appropriate sockets
  • Torque wrench
  • Penetrating oil (if hardware is corroded)
  • Wire brush or small wire wheel
  • Shop rags and drip pan
  • Safety glasses and gloves
Instructions:
  1. Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake, and open the hood. Wear safety glasses and gloves.
  2. If the master cylinder must be supported or removed, place a drip pan and use appropriate support to prevent strain on brake lines; catch any leaking fluid and clean spills immediately.
  3. Apply penetrating oil to corroded nuts/studs and allow time to soak if necessary.
  4. Use the socket wrench to remove the old nuts and washers while supporting the master cylinder as needed.
  5. Clean mounting studs and surrounding area with a wire brush to remove rust and debris.
  6. Install a washer onto each stud, then thread the new nut by hand to ensure correct engagement.
  7. Tighten nuts with a socket wrench and finish with a torque wrench to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified torque (consult the factory service manual). Do not overtighten.
  8. If the master cylinder was disturbed or removed, bleed the brake system following factory procedures and check for leaks.
  9. Test brake pedal feel at low speed in a safe area and recheck hardware torque and brake fluid level after initial use.
